Gettin' there...
Since my last post, I have knocked out some things on the seemingly never-ending to-do list. The Bible quiz on Thursday morning ended up being one question: "did you read or not?" so that was a breeze because I had indeed done the reading the night before. Thursday night Nikki did a load of my laundry (according to the stakes from the pool game... haha) and I was in the library for almost 3 hours and then about another hour or more in my dorm room working on our marketing presentation. But Hallelujah, Friday afternoon came and went and our marketing presentation is now OVER. WOOHOO. To celebrate/relax from a brutal week I went with Matt to dinner in Batesville and bowling in Heber Springs (woohoo for getting out of Searcy!). We had a great night - I really love that guy! Jaime was in town for the weekend so yesterday some of us went out for dinner and went bowling (twice in one weekend... yes!). However, my elbow is now in a lot of pain. Last week Nikki and I were playing air hockey and I kinda hyper-extended my elbow a little bit. After awhile it felt fine and I never thought about it again. But last night when we were bowling I felt a shot of pain when I was throwing my 2nd to last ball. It's still hurting today. Hooray for injuring myself in sports like air hockey and bowling... I'm hardcore.. haha! This afternoon I've been kinda lazy but I have studied a bit for my OB test and on a much cooler note, made some new playlists for my iPod for the roadtrip home :)
This week isn't looking too bad... the end is in sight:
Tonight: Marketing quiz due online
Monday: OB test
Tuesday: Bible quiz
Wednesday: Reading of "The Life You've Always Wanted" due... I'm already done... BOOYAH
Thursday: Accounting project due
Friday: LAST DAY OF CLASSES!

Pluggin' Away
Well it's been awhile since I last posted. Things have been busy to say the least. The news of Debbie weighed pretty heavy on my mind last week but right when I needed a pick-me-up, we got to go to the Brian Regan concert on Friday night. A ton of laughs at the concert equivalent to an ab workout and then some friendly competition at the pool hall later brightened my spirits. Saturday was some homework and watching "The Hurricane" (w/ Denzel Washington.) It's rated R for language but it's based on a true story and it's a really good show. I suggest watching it if you ever have the chance. We also got a sweet deal at Hastings. We got the last 4 seasons we needed of M*A*S*H for the price of 2 because they were having a sale on boxed sets. WOOHOO! Sunday was more homework and a finance study session. Monday I had a meeting w/ Dr. Frazier about the SAM Team. More on this later when I've made a decision, but it sounds like a great opportunity. Monday night Blackboard was down so I was worried I wasn't gonna be able to take my online accounting test due on Tuesday but it came back up so I could take it.. and then I ended up running out of time on it because I was trying to do too many things at once. I was SO mad. At that moment all the pressures of deadlines and assignments and tests and the pain of Debbie's cancer all crushed down on me at once. I probably cried for a good half hour at least. I ended up not doing so hot on the test b/c I didn't have time to finish but he's letting us do some stuff to make up some lost points so that was nice of him. I aced my Bible quiz that morning though so that was nice. Then Tuesday night was our finance test. Found out today that I made an A on that so that was nice. I got all registered for my fall classes today and got everything I wanted. Woohoo! I also found out that Oliver moved our OB test from Friday to Monday so that gives me some room to breathe.
What's left for this week:
-Bible quiz tomorrow (minor reading tonight, won't take long)
-huge Marketing group presentation due Friday (we still have a lot of work to do on that one *gulp*!)
Random sidenote: Nikki and I have started putting stakes on our pool games. Last week I had to buy her dessert at Chile's cuz I lost a 5 game series (3-2). Today we played a 3 game series and I won so she has to do a load of laundry for me. It's really convenient because I only have 2 pairs left of... well you get the picture ;)
Back to the homework...

Life Is As Long As Hope
Last night I got some bad news on the phone from Mom. I could tell as soon as I picked up and heard her voice that something wasn't right. I asked her what was wrong and she paused and started to tell me and then started crying...
Last summer Dale's sister Debbie was diagnosed w/ breast cancer. It came as quite a shock but she went through chemo and then a couple months ago, had surgery. We thought things were looking up. Then lately she'd been in a lot of pain but thought it might be due to a recent fall she had. She went in for some tests and at first the doctors wouldn't tell her anything. Then yesterday the bombshell dropped. She has bone cancer and they don't give her any chance of surviving. She asked them "bottom line, how much time do I have left?" and they wouldn't even give her an answer. It's pretty bad. Last night my emotions ranged from shock to sadness to anger to wanting to forget that I had ever heard those words from Mom. Needless to say the family is pretty devastated. Prayers would be much appreciated. Below is a poem that my friend Diego called to my attention from the textbook in our Gospel of John class. It was encouraging to me to be reminded of it. (The book is "Journey of Faith: Walking With Jesus Through the Gospel of John" by Bruce McLarty and the poem is by Dr. Michael G. Justus)
How Long Is This Life?
How long is this life?
It is the space from one heart beat to the next.
It is as long as the eternal second needed to say, "I do".
Life is measured in the months needed to grow a baby in the womb.
...the hours of labor to deliever an infant.
...the years to raise a secure adolescent.
...the emotional seconds of saying good-bye to a young adult.
...the lonely minutes of laying to rest an exhausted parent.
Life is counted from one Christmas morning to the next in the heart of a child and from one family reunion to the next in the heart of a parent.
It is gauged by the spread of contagious laughter and by the time it takes a swelling tear to slip to the tip of the chin.
It is valued by the exhilarating moments of free-flight between the release of the rope and the chill of the creek below.
It is measured by the number of anxious rings before a wife answers the phone and by the number of smiles a husband saves for his family at the end of the day.
Life is as brief as the stroke of a gavel, punctuating the sentence of conviction, and as long as the gift, "I forgive".
Rather than asking, "How long is this life?" perhaps, we should ask, "How long is hope?"
Hope is the distance from the nail in the left hand to the one in the right.
Life is as long as hope.

A Better Life
** I got this in an email forward from my Uncle Bill. I think it has some valuable lessons in it**
38 Tips for Better Life
1. Take a 10-30 minute walk every day. And while you walk, smile. It is the ultimate anti-depressant.
2. Sit in silence for at least 10 minutes each day. Buy a lock if you have to.
3. Buy a DVR and tape your late night shows and get more sleep.
4. When you wake up in the morning complete the following statement, 'My purpose is to __________ today.'
5. Live with the 3 E's -- Energy, Enthusiasm, and Empathy.
6. Play more games and read more books than you did last year.
7. Make time to practice meditation, yoga, tai chi, and prayer. They provide us with daily fuel for our busy lives.
8. Spend time with people over the age of 70 and under the age of 6.
9. Dream more while you are awake.
10. Eat more foods that grow on trees and plants and eat less food that is manufactured in plants.
11. Drink green tea and plenty of water.. Eat blueberries, wild Alaskan salmon, broccoli, almonds & walnuts.
12. Try to make at least three people smile each day.
13. Clear clutter from your house, your car, your desk and let new and flowing energy into your life.
14. Don't waste your precious energy on gossip, energy vampires, issues of the past, negative thoughts or things you cannot control. Instead invest your energy in the positive present moment.
15. Realize that life is a school and you are here to learn. Problems are simply part of the curriculum that appear and fade away like algebra class but the lessons you learn will last a lifetime.
16. Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a college kid with a maxed out charge card.
17. Smile and laugh more. It will keep the energy vampires away.
18. Life isn't fair, but it's still good.
19. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone.
20. Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does.
21. You don't have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.
22. Make peace with your past so it won't spoil the present.
23. Don't compare your life to others'. You have no idea what their journey is all about.
24. No one is in charge of your happiness except you.
25. Frame every so-called disaster with these words: 'In five years, will this matter?'
26. Forgive everyone for everything.
27. What other people think of you is none of your business.
28. However good or bad a situation is, it will change.
29. Your job won't take care of you when you are sick. Your friends will. Stay in touch.
30. Get rid of anything that isn't useful, beautiful or joyful.
31. Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need.
32. The best is yet to come.
33. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.
34. Do the right thing!
35. Call your family often. (Or email them to death!!!) Hey I'm think'n of ya! =)
36. Each night before you go to bed complete the following statements: I am thankful for __________. Today I accomplished _________.
37. Remember that you are too blessed to be stressed.
38. Enjoy the ride. Remember this is not Disney World and you certainly don't want a fast pass. You only have one ride through life so make the most of it and enjoy the ride.

Courage is Rewarding
In previous posts, I've alluded to my fear of what's going to happen in the future. Being the type that likes to have some level of control over things and at least some type of schedule or plan, the uncertainty that lies in my future is troubling sometimes. I finally got the courage to share some feelings of fear (regarding the future) with Matt on Monday night. I don't know why I was so worried... I guess because of the element of vulnerability that comes with being that honest. However, we had an excellent talk and I feel so much better. He reassured me about a lot of things regarding our relationship and I feel so much closer to him because of it. Hooray for biting the bullet and talking about things that matter :)
**In other news, I just found out that I totally aced last week's paper in accounting. He thought I did an "excellent" job. That feels pretty darn good!**

A (Deserved?) Weekend of Fun
After the past couple weeks of academic intensity, I rewarded myself with a fun weekend. Friday night Matt and I went out for dinner and then watched Die Hard With A Vengeance (aka Die Hard 3). Yesterday I slept in and then Nik and I went to Little Rock. We started at the zoo which was a little disappointing considering we couldn't even see half the animals because the staff was cleaning their cages. However, it was a nice day yesterday and the walk in the fresh air was nice. Then we went to TJMaxx and found some great deals. Stopped at Outback for dinner and after waiting a long time, had a delicious meal. Drove around a couple dealerships and dreamt about buying various cars. Headed back to Searcy for an intense 5 game pool match. Came back to the dorm, watched a couple episodes of M*A*S*H and passed out. Overall, a great day.
Today after church I studied a bit for my OB re-test tomorrow and other than that, don't have much to do this afternoon. Think I might just take it easy and prepare for another decently busy week. So far only 1 test and 3 quizzes that I know about but that's liable to change...

DONE!
Yeah that's right, the 5 page accounting paper is done. And I feel pretty good about it.
BOOYAH! :)
BOOYAH! :)
Makin' progress
update time:
-Got back the Finance test today. I made an A. After studying a bunch last nite (and still not feeling prepared) I took the Marketing test this afternoon and also made an A. Last nite I also finished the 2 Accounting assignments that are due tomorrow. This afternoon I read for tomorrow's Bible quiz and now I'm working on that paper for Accounting. I'm about 1/3 done... but I have an idea of what else I'm gonna say so that's a huge help. I also read a chapter for the OB retest on Monday so I'm feeling better about that one too.
-Officially heard from the housing lady today. We're gonna be Lena's suitemates in Pryor! Yay for first floor and yay for suitemates we actually know! (The ones we were originally gonna be with we had no idea who they were). I'm feeling much better now that that's all figured out.
-A few weeks ago I was really worried about a bunch of future stuff. Upcoming assignments, tests and projects. What I'm going to do for a job over the summer. Whether I can go to camp this summer or not. Next year's classes. Next year's housing. What I'm going to do when I graduate. Where I will be in my relationships. Etc. Etc...
...As for the assignments, I'm daily takin' them down. I'm still a little worried about a couple of them but I'm gonna feel really good when I knock this paper out. It's been weighing on me a bit. As for what I'm going to do over the summer, I've already posted about how I'm gonna work for my aunt. As for camp, it turns out I do get to go! I got the go-ahead from my aunt for the time off and I talked to the director and he wants me to be a counselor again. As for fall classes, I sat down the other nite and figured some things out and if everything works out, I'm gonna have a pretty sweet sched for next fall! As for next year's housing, see above. As for the other two, I'm trying not to worry about them too much. A lot can happen in a year so I'm trying to relax a little.
Anyways, back to the paper-writing...

The Pupilage (and Other Busy-ness) Continues
Academically speaking: After my last post, I finally got that online marketing quiz and online accounting test done, took the Bible quiz and took another marketing quiz over the weekend. Yesterday I had a finance test (@ 8:15 pm...ughh!) but I think it went pretty well. Today I would have had a quiz in Bible but I skipped class and slept in (which is in a way unfortunate because I'd actually read for the quiz!). I have a Marketing test tomorrow (but as always, we get 2 shots at it... so if I suck it up, I can redeem myself on Friday). Thursday brings another Bible quiz, 2 accounting assignments and a 5 page paper due. Monday is a retest in OB b/c apparently a bunch of people failed the one we had last week. I made a B, but I'm excited for a chance to improve a little. Tuesday is another Bible quiz... and so it goes... on and on...
Non-academically speaking: Friday night 5 of us went to LR for dinner and then came back to Searcy and went bowling for Brenna's bday. We had our housing appointment (re: next year) on Saturday but now things have changed again... will post about that when everything is official. Sunday was my Delta Mu Delta (business honors society) induction banquet. Matt went with me and it was actually pretty fun. Free dinner, a good speaker, a certificate and a group pic... not bad! Tonight was our open house so Matt came over and brought Die Harder (Die Hard 2). I'm diggin' this action flick theme we've got going on... I'm determined to watch all 4 of them before the semester is over.
Real quickly, I'd like to say that modern technology is great sometimes. This weekend Matt and I had a pretty meaningful conversation through Facebook messages because he was working which prevented us from talking face-to-face. We've actually talked about some pretty important stuff on weekends via the world of Facebook. Hooray for communicating even when we can't be together!
